What Kind of Playing Will You Learn?

The approach combines gentle layers of sound with an awareness of fading resonance and silence. Learn step by step, from producing a sound to sharing it with listeners.

Listen to Magali Luhan’s performances first and see whether this is the kind of sound you would like to create.

Learn with Magali Luhan

Magali Luhan, crystal singing bowl instructor

All lessons are taught by sound bath artist Magali Luhan. Based at studio PLAYA in Asakusabashi, Tokyo, Magali performs at public, corporate, and art events and writes books on crystal singing bowls and sound baths.

The Listener’s Experience Comes First

An experience grows from each listener’s own senses, rather than being something the performer simply gives them. Alongside technique and theory, we explore how to create sound and a space that allow this to happen.

Why We Do Not Offer Professional Certification

A teacher and learner do not need to remain in a hierarchy. I prefer a relationship of mutual respect, in which each person can develop their own sound.

There are no certified performer or authorized instructor qualifications, association memberships, or annual fees. Learn what you need and continue practicing at your own pace.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Take a Lesson Without Owning a Bowl?

For First Step, we provide three practice bowls per person, so you can attend before buying any. Method is a theory class for bowl owners who can already play basic sounds; no bowls need to be brought. For Follow-Up, please bring your own bowls. We recommend at least three bowls for performances combining multiple notes.

Can I Attend If I Bought My Bowls Elsewhere or Studied at Another School?

Where you bought your bowls or studied does not, by itself, restrict participation. For practical lessons using your own instruments, we recommend thin, lightweight Clear Light or Alchemy bowls. Frosted bowls may not be suitable, so please ask in advance. Listen to the teacher’s performances to see whether the style suits you. We will not publish participants’ names or photos without permission.

Will I Be Able to Play After One Lesson?

Lessons introduce techniques and practice tips, but developing your skills requires your own practice. First Step includes review videos. If questions come up as you practice, a Follow-Up lesson can help.

Can I Learn from Outside Tokyo or from Overseas?

The recorded First Step Video Lesson is available to watch online after logging in to MOSH. The instruction is in Japanese. View Video Lesson Details. You can also begin by reading the books, which are in Japanese.

Can I Learn as a Hobby Without Any Musical Experience?

Yes. First Step welcomes people with no musical knowledge or experience playing an instrument. You do not need to aim for a professional career; you may simply want to play for yourself or people close to you. This is a lesson covering instrument handling and technique, rather than a short taster session. Method has prerequisites, so please check its details.

What If Sitting on the Floor Is Difficult for Me?

During in-person lessons, you sit on the floor and reach toward bowls on the floor. If prolonged sitting or leaning forward is difficult, please contact us before booking. Recorded lessons are also available for learning at home.

Will the Lessons Lead to Paid Work?

We support your learning toward performing and hosting events, but do not offer job placements or guarantee income. Through practice and experience, you can develop an approach to performing that suits you.

Are There Qualifications, Membership Requirements, or Additional Costs?

There is no professional certification, required association membership, or annual fee. Some lessons include a certificate of completion as a memento, not a professional qualification. First Step requires a specified textbook, charged separately if you do not already own it. Instruments and travel costs are not included. After the lesson, you are free to develop your own artistic practice.

Do I Need to Take All the Lessons in Order?

Choose the lessons that meet your needs; there is no monthly tuition plan. Beginners should start with First Step. Otherwise, choose according to your experience and interests.

Are These Spiritual Lessons?

These lessons do not assume any particular faith or spiritual belief and are not intended for spiritual practice or healing. They cover sound, performance technique and theory, and consideration for the listener. They do not involve the teacher transmitting special energy.
