Crystal Singing Bowls About Crystal Singing Bowls
Crystal singing bowls are bowl-shaped instruments made from quartz. Gently striking a bowl or rubbing its rim produces a lingering, resonant tone.
Sound bath artist Magali Luhan introduces their sounds, types, and ways to enjoy them.
What Is a Crystal Singing Bowl?

A crystal singing bowl is an instrument made by melting quartz and shaping it into a bowl. It is played by gently striking it or rubbing its rim with a special mallet.
Each bowl has its own pitch and tone. You can enjoy a single bowl’s resonance or layer several bowls to create harmonies.
What Do They Sound Like?
Their ringing tones gradually spread and linger. The size and thickness of a bowl, as well as how it is played, shape its sound.
Start by listening to a performance. This is a livestream I recorded in April 2024. Choose a volume that feels comfortable for you.
Part of the pleasure lies in the quiet as the resonance gradually fades, as well as in the sound itself.
Hear Live Music at a Sound Bath
A sound bath is a chance to lie down and listen to gentle live music. Crystal singing bowls are one of the instruments used in these performances.
I host sessions mainly at studio PLAYA in Asakusabashi, Tokyo. You do not need to meditate well or feel anything special. Listen and spend the time in your own way. These events are not intended for spiritual practice or healing. Guidance is primarily in Japanese.

Types of Crystal Singing Bowls
Bowls are often described as frosted, Clear Light, or alchemy bowls, based on their appearance and construction. Even bowls of the same type can sound different, so listen to the individual instrument as well as considering its name.
Frosted Bowls

These bowls have a milky-white surface and thick walls. They come in a range of sizes and can be played by rubbing the rim to sustain a continuous tone.
Clear Light Bowls

These transparent bowls are thin and lightweight. In my performances, I work with their long resonance and the harmonies created by layering several bowls.
Our online shop sells Clear Light Bowls. Each product page includes an audio sample so you can compare their sounds.

Alchemy Bowls

These bowls combine quartz with other minerals or metals, creating distinctive colors and textures. Materials and manufacturing methods vary between products. Explore the individual tones as well as their appearance.
How Do They Differ from Metal Singing Bowls?
Crystal singing bowls and metal singing bowls are both bowl-shaped instruments. The main difference is the material.
Material, shape, and thickness all affect the sound. Rather than seeing one as better than the other, I suggest listening and finding a sound you enjoy.
The Origins and History of Crystal Singing Bowls
Bowl-shaped instruments have a long history, but crystal singing bowls made from processed quartz are modern instruments. Their history should be distinguished from that of metal singing bowls.
